Mr. Frank Goishi

Frank Goishi, a laughter-filled, warm man invited us into his old retirement home room where we slowly sat down to listen to his story. However, once he began his story, Mr. Goishi’s beautiful smile turned into deep heart-wrenching sadness when he re-imagined his experience.

On August 6th, 1945 Frank Goishi, an 18 year old student, was just about to start school when he saw from the outskirts of Hiroshima city the bright flash that almost blinded his eyes. Although Mr. Goishi was not physically harmed from the atomic bomb, he single-handedly witnessed his whole city burn into flames as the blast destroyed the buildings, leaving ruins of all kinds. He lost so many friends and family members, it pains for him to talk about his memories from back then.

After many years, Mr. Goishi immigrated to the United States and was drafted to participate in the Korean War (fighting for America.) Looking back, Mr. Goishi sighed, “I was involved in two different wars in my lifetime. I don’t ever understand why humans always want to fight in wars. We never learn.” Mr. Goishi’s profound words really impacted us, because he speaks about so many issues we as a generation still face today. Hoping to never experience a war again, Mr. Goishi deeply wishes for the young people in our generation to ensure peace and security so people won’t have to experience his same pain and sadness.
