Ms. Suzuka Nakamura

We had the absolute pleasure of having an online zoom meeting with Ms. Suzuka Nakamura on September 26, 2022. Nakamura-san is a passionate nuclear disarmament activist and co-founder of KNOW NUKES TOKYO. We learned about Nakamura-san's many intriguing efforts and gained a better understanding of nuclear disarmament via our meeting with her.

Nakamura-san began her journey as a nuclear disarmament activist since high school in Nagasaki, Japan. Her community was highly dedicated to nuclear disarmament efforts and was frequently covered in many media outlets. After graduating from high school, she connects with more media platforms to highlight the significant news regarding nuclear disarmament. During the pandemic, Nakamura-san founded KNOW NUKES TOKYO, a Tokyo-based organization dedicated to the eradication of nuclear weapons. Her group hosts video conferences for online Hibakusha testimonials, participates in political campaigns for nuclear abolishment, and visits various schools around Japan to educate students about nuclear weapons and disarmament.

"Compared to environmental or human rights problems, nuclear disarmament is a topic that the public is less familiar with. The majority of people outside of Hiroshima are unaware of this critical issue. Nuclear weapons will always pose a significant risk since there is no known method for resolving the situation when a nuclear weapon is dropped. Even though nuclear disarmament is a less touched upon subject, if we continue taking steps with our activism, we may one day live in a world free of nuclear weapons," Nakamura-san said.

We had a very pleasant yet insightful conversation with Ms. Suzuka Nakamura. We cannot agree more on our conversation about the importance of raising awareness of nuclear disarmament. This is a global issue that will affect everyone in the most significant way, equally dire as climate change and human rights. We hope that through our meeting with Nakamura san, we can further educate ourselves and our community about disarmament and take more steps toward a future without nuclear weapons.
