Teens’ Dialogue with Guatemala on Nuclear Disarmament and Non- Proliferation

Teens4Disarmament continues to participate and dedicate themselves to the Personalization Project in 2023. Through this forum, Teens4Disarmament had the opportunity to learn and personalize with students from Japan and Guatemala. Together, students from Japan and Guatemala personalized thought-provoking questions about their countries and its past. In one session, students discussed their education system and expressed concern about its lack of diversity. Before our discussion, both countries’ students gave a presentation about the wars that had impacted them the most. The Guatemalan students expressed the pain of the Spanish Civil War and its influence on Guatemala and their lives. For the Japanese students, it was the atomic bombing of Hiroshima city that profoundly altered the lives of their family members and themselves. It came to a surprising finding that the Guatemalan students have never heard of the atomic bombing in Hiroshima, and the Japanese students have never heard of the Spanish Civil War. The presentation that the students listened to that day was their only exposure to international conflicts. Think about that. As Louisa, a Japanese student further added, “I lived in both America and Japan and never once learned about the Spanish Civil War. We didn’t even graze over the topic.” Teens4Disarmament knew this was a grave issue. We simply assumed and believed that every country’s education system must include the topic of international conflicts and geopolitical issues. Soichiro, a Japanese student stated, “We only focus on the bigger conflicts, but not necessarily the smaller ones, which are actually equally important.” Without the process of learning, acknowledging, and embracing the struggles other countries face, the future generation is bound to make the same mistake again. A famous quote I once read, “history teaches humility through perspective.” After all, we can only know progress if we know what we are progressing from. We must all learn from the past and try our best to avoid war. Given it is essential to learn about foreign wars, we asked the students whether high school students should learn about war. Nicol, from Guatemala, urged that students of all ages must learn. She stated, “I understand it is painful, but it is necessary for peace. I learned about the Spanish Civil War when I was young. The war was part of our lives. It has defined who we are and what we do. Other countries should know this.” Everyday Teens4Disarmament strives to make a change. We believe thought-provoking discussions like this are so important, and why international communication between teenagers is imperative.
